Final Report Spring Semester 2012

My plan for this semester in Practicum was to get away from Sports a little bit and try to gain more experience in other areas. Since this was my third Practicum and I have not completed all Practicums at Florida Southern, I felt like I should expand my knowledge and skills and at the same time try to find out what kind of broadcasting suits me the best. The department has a lot of different shows and programs to offer, so I had to really think about which I wanted to work with a little more this semester. Since I have already had a glimpse into The Southern News show in the fall, I chose Wellness TV. I liked the concept of the News show and everything Anna Birenbaum does, but I never really had a chance to work with Wellness TV before. Another reason I chose Wellness TV is, because I wanted variety. By doing all these different packages and helping out with more than one package for each show, I got to experience a lot of different things. Also, with the Sports Show we never really had to sit down and discuss what we were going to cover, or research at all. With Wellness TV I had more the feeling like we were an actual show. Brainstorming ideas for packages, discussing topics and what to shoot, who to interview and all that gave me a better idea of how it really works in the business.
I was not allowed to do packages or interviews by myself, because I have not taken Intro to Broadcast yet. That is why I felt I was a little bit limited as to what I can learn and actually do things hands-on myself with Wellness TV.  As my main goal for the semester was to be a better camera person and find out where in the field I best fit in, I decided around the middle of the semester to work a little less with Wellness TV. I therefore started working on some projects with Interlachen. I shot pictures at multiple events and I actually developed a strong desire to get  more into photography now. The work with Interlachen and working with Nya on pictures is the reason I am taking Dr. Drake’s Photo Journalism class in the fall.
Working with Wellness TV, nevertheless, taught me many things. Not only did I get to experience the atmosphere of being part the whole production process of a show in our weekly meetings, but I also learned a lot about researching, brainstorming and coming up with ideas and concepts. Michelle was also the first person, who ever showed me a little bit about editing. As a quick mention, I think Michelle did a great job as the producer. I also learned that a lot of things can go wrong and you have to double check everything, from camera battery life to audio settings and to always bring headphones for a soundcheck before the interview. During the interview it is important to pay attention to the light and the background noises. We experienced some difficulties with bouncing basketballs in the gym or the sun ruining the material when we had someone stand in front of a window. Overall, working with Wellness TV and especially with Michelle taught me a lot.
I am glad, though, I did not lose sight of my goals for the semester and went on and experienced more things.
I have never had the chance to go to any baseball or lacrossse games, since they are off campus and I do not have a vehicle.  After Jonathan had offered to give me a ride to a Women’s Lacrosse game, I found the experience to be really helpful. It turned out to be the most effective two and a half hours with filming sports that I have had so far. Since there are not many practicum people at Women’s Lacrosse games, I got to film more. Lacrosse is also way more difficult to film than any other sports that I have filmed so far. In order to follow the ball you have to be very precise and pay very good attention to the game. The ball moves so fast and the players are usually all really close together when it moves to offense. That means you have to be really quick and almost try to predict    who the ball is going to be passed at. It also means you have to be really good at zooming in order for it to look fluently. Johnathan was the one who basically taught me all of this. I have the impression he knows a lot more than other people that have already taken Intro to Broadcast, or at least he is willing to share his knowledge and really tries to make you a better camera man.
Altogether I would say I pretty much fulfilled all my expectations and reached a lot of the goals I had for myself for this semester. The switch, and the variety of things I did, gave me exactly what I wanted: a better understanding of the different things one can do in broadcasting.

Sports Show - 1 hour 15 minutes

On Wednesday, April 11, I went to the last Sports show of the semester and Luti's last show in college. I was running the teleprompter. We had a guest female guest for the interview part and then we had problems with the teleprompter for the other part. We tried a lot of different things but the setup was just never right so we had to stop and reschedule.

Editing Sports - 3 1/2 hours

On Tuesday, April 10, I was editing the Lacrosse games from the weekend with Johnathan and Nya. We edited everything and put all the highlights together while Krissy was helping us a little bit in the beginning and then we had a problem because we were working on Krissy's account and we weren't able to save it. We had to call multiple people until we reached Jordan who told us to leave the tape out and everything how it is and she will try to fix it in the morning. Regardless I have learned a lot about editing sports that day. I learned how to look for the right highlights, how to cut out our voices (you could hear us talk while filming the game) and how to put it together in the right time frame.

Lacrosse Women's game and Men's game - 5 hours

I went to the doubler header of Lacrosse games on Saturday, March 7th, with Jonathan, Krissy was there too and Tracy for a little bit. We had some camera issues for the Mens game because Tracy had left with one, but then figured it out and were ready to shoot the second game. We stayed from 3.30 to 6.00 p.m. for the Womens game then went to grab food to get back in time for the men's. I shot parts of both games without Johnathan's help. I feel like I really improved a lot with shooting Lacrosse and I think that I can shoot sports better in general now. Compared to Basketball or Soccer it is way harder to follow the ball and get good highlights, so shooting so many games not only made me learn more about the different cameras we used, but it also made me a better camera men.

Women's LAX game - 2 1/2 hours

On Wednesday, April 4th, me and Jonathan went to the Lacrosse game together. I find it very helpful to go to Women's Lacrosse games with him because I get to shoot a lot (since it's usually just me and him and sometimes Krissy or Tracy)  and he knows a lot about shooting for sports and and especially Lacrosse.

Women's LAX game - 2 1/2 hours

On Saturday, March 24th, I went to the Women's Lacrosse game again with Johnathan. I shot part of the game and Jonathan was helping me and giving me tips.

Women's LAX game - 2 1/2 hours

I went to the Women's Lacrosse game on Tuesday, March 20th. Jonathan gave me a ride there and I helped him shoot the game, he gave me useful tips as usual.

Women's LAX game - 2 1/2 hours

On Tuesday, March 13 I went to the Women's Lacrosse game to help Jonathan filming. Jonathan explained  to me how Lacrosse works since that was the first Lacrosse game I have ever been to. He also showed me what's important when taping Lacrosse. I tried filming, Jonathan had to help me though, because it ws really hard to follow the ball.

WTV Meeting - 30 min

On Monday 6, I went to the Wellness TV Meeting. We discussed the 2nd show, which is focusing on Spring Break. I said I would help doing a package on Last Minute Crash workouts for Spring Break and interview someone in the Wellness Center for it. I was thinking either Erin or Samantha and decided on Erin because Samantha was out of town that week.

fInterview with Erin Sneed for WTV + editing after with Michelle - 5 hours

On February 15 at 4 p.m. I met with Michelle to interview Erin Sneed in the Wellness Center for our package. I had the questions written out and informed her in advance to be prepared to show us some exercises. She had a lot to say and looked really professionally. After we did the main interview by the couches in the Wellness Center, we went down to the Basketball court to do the rest. Jay Hubble was demonstrating the different exercises for us while Erin was saying what is important with each exercise.
The package would have been a really good one we went upstairs into the gym afterwards to get some more b- roll. Sadly the audio was broken so we could not use any of it. We noticed that when we were editing afterwards. It was all plugged in properly, but something inside the thing was broken.
We did some more editing for the next show though.

Wellness TV Meeting - 20 Minutes

On January 30, I went to the Wellness TV meeting. We discussed how our packages for the first show are going and how interviews are working out. Then we also threw in some ideas on what we could do for the second show. We decided we are going to make it a spring break special and include packages that will prepare people for spring break.

WTV - Set up Interview with Erin Sneed for 4 p.m. next Wednesday

Sports Show - 1 hour

I went to the Sports Show yesterday. We had a women's gulf player as a guest. The show (not the interview) needed to be redone because someone forgot to hit record again. I was operating camera 1 for the both times. We also had our group picture taken by a someone for Interlachen.

Pictures for Interlachen - 2 hours

On Monday, February 6, Nya and I took pictures of a sorority and  fraternity. We met with the president of the one sorority before everyone showed up at Lynn Garden and discussed how and where exactly it would be good for everyone to stand. We then took some test shots of me standing at theat spot to see how the light will work. Once the about 50 girls got there, we had them stand facing the parking lot so the lake was in the background. We had them stand in 3 lines and arranged them around a little bit until we got the perfect picture.
We met the fraternity an hour later by Ordway and had them stand in between Ordway and Rogers so that little garden and the foutain were in the backgorund. They were joking around a lot so it took longer to have them all stand how we wanted them to. But in the end we got a really nice picture too.

:(

On Saturday, February 4, I spontanously went to the Basketball game but no one who signed up to be there brought a camera. I DID NOT SIGN UP TO BE THERE. In defense for the people who signed up to be there though, everytime Jordan posted games on the Facbook group last semester she was the one supervising the game so she brought the camera. It was never any of the lower-class people who had to bring the camera. None of them expected her to not be there when she posted it on the facebook group.

Wellness TV Meeting - 30 Minutes

On Monday, February 6, I went to the WTV meeting. Michelle mentioned in the beginning that she is almost done wrapping up the first show and that she liked what we all did. The only thing we should pay attention to when we shoot for the next show was the length of our packages. Most of them were too long, they should only be 1.15-1.30 min. long. We then assigned new packages for the seccond show, which will include stuff like "Spring Break Safety" and I will work on "Last Minute Spring Break Crash Work-Outs" with Michelle.

"Up til Dawn" Event - 2 hours

On Friday, February 3, Nya and I met at Bankock Garden where the volunteers were starting to build up all the stuff for the "Up til Dawn" event, which took place later that day. They wanted people from Interlachen to go there and take a picture of the crew and the event. They were all wearing very cute matching Shirts so we had them stand in front of the blown up jumping castle, which matched their colorful shirts. We also took pictures of people setting up the event and what people were doing to get a perfect impression on what the event was like.

Shoot for Wellness TV - 1 hour

On Thursday, February 2, I met with Sarah and Dion to interview Wellness TV staff and get some b-roll for our package. The Package was on how to work out with a partner. We interviewed a work-study student who was working at that time in the afternoon. She talked about the possibilities students have to work out with a partner on campus (like running the lake together or tandem-biking) and then she showed us some exercises you can do with a partner (mostly ab-workouts). We got some b-roll of people lifting weights and cycling together, as well as, people doing launches together.

45 Minutes - Wellnes TV Meeting

I went to the first Wellness TV Meeting on January 23. Michelle is the new supervisor replacing Cynthia, who cannot be here this semester. Michelle did a really good job. We went over general things that changed this semester (f.ex. that we turn in outlines of our scripts before we run them) and then we went over what we're gonna do for the first show. I signed up to do a "How to work out with a partner" story with Sarah.
It was an interesting meeting and I'm excited for more WTV this year.

2 Hours - Basketball Game

First Broadcast Hours for the Spring Semester in Broadcast Practicum 3! yeeaahhi!! So I went to the Basketball game on January 14 to support our team all the way up above the stands. We were sitting where all the other Reporters and Broadcast people for the school are sitting as well. We had a better camera, that I shot with for the first time that day. I took turns filming with Tracy, Jordan and Justin. The person that was not filming was taking notes of the exact times when our team scored, or there was a highlight or when the person filming got a really good shot. We had a good team and I really liked working with that camera. The zooming especially was better and easier to handle with that camera compared to smaller camera.
We stayed from 7.30 pm until 9.30 pm.
